Position Summary

The Production Manager will work in the manufacturing environment and oversee the production processes for metal sheeting and purlins. Items are sold from production stock or through custom orders. The Production Manager will ensure timely and effective transformation (raw material, manufacture, fulfilment) of production purchase orders to the highest quality and safety standards.

He/she is a leader who oversees a talented team of machine operators and supervises all aspects of day-to-day operations by implementing efficiency, cost reduction and continuous improvement initiatives. The Production Manager will analyse problems and develop action plans to improve performance.

Positions reporting to the Manager: Production Supervisor, Team Leaders, Workers

Liaises with Sales, Warehouse, Administration, and Inventory Departments

Responsibilities

  • Prepare Production Control Reports each day for all completed orders.
  • Plan production schedules based on Purchase Orders. Provide estimated dates for timely completion of customer orders.
  • Schedule staff to complete assigned tasks to maximize daily productivity.
  • Establish and monitor a system of checks and balances for Finished Goods.
  • Assess resource requirements for orders. Request, verify, and record coil consumption by order.
  • Prepare monthly overtime reports for production team workers.
  • Record jobs by Coil ID so that coils may be tracked.
  • Record and track all damaged or substandard production.
  • Ensure that manufacturing equipment and tools function properly.
  • Maintain machinery and record any downtime. Organise the repair of any damaged equipment.
  • Schedule a calendar of routine maintenance to keep equipment running effectively.
  • Work with Sales Department as needed to sign off on final order quantities.
  • Collaborate with Sales, Warehouse, CAD Technician, Inventory, as needed.
  • Ensure that correct items and quantities are delivered, per Customer orders.
  • Manage and create a safe and accident-free production area for all. Work with the Safety Officer and the OSH Manual to ensure compliance.
  • Immediately report to the General Manager any accidents or unusual occurrences.
  • Review the productivity of the department’s manufacturing equipment.
  • Supervise team members time and attendance.
  • Maintain quality standards in all finished goods.
  • Motivate, train, and provide guidance and support to production teams.
  • Communicate with management regarding issues impacting production.
  • Set productivity goals for each manufacturing team.
  • Develop workflow procedures that improve efficiency without compromising safety or quality.
  • Assisting in the recruitment and onboarding of new hires
  • Monitor raw materials and coil orders to ensure adequate stock levels
  • Conduct cross training in the department for succession planning

Requirements

  • Minimum of a Post Graduate Degree in Engineering Management from a recognised institution.
  • An undergraduate degree in Engineering (mechanical, electrical) from a recognized institution.
  • At least 10 years’ experience of which five should be at the senior management level.
  • Proficient in production calculations, and accurate estimations when quoting on customer orders.

Work Conditions

  • The Production Manager may have to spend long hours standing, working in humid conditions and dust nuisance is common.
  • The production area can be very noisy, and one may find it difficult to complete multiple tasks. You would be required to demonstrate excellent organizational, time and stress management skills to mitigate the negative effects of the unavoidable environment.
  • Mental demands from multi-tasking and management of general duties may become daunting. The Production Manager will have to manage stress and complete tasks within tight deadlines.
